The Mystery of 58 Ancient Shipwrecks in One Location in Greece
John Stella is a dive industry professional with over 35 years of experience, including 25 years with SCUBAPO USA. In 2015, John was recruited as a member of a Greek Archaeological dive team. The dive team's mission was to conduct an underwater survey around a small island located in the northeast corner of the Aegean Sea, just off the coast of Asia Minor. When the survey was completed, the team had identified and documented twenty-two ancient shipwrecks, with the oldest dating back to 600 BCE.
After nine visits to the island over the last nine years, the team has now identified and documented fifty-eight ancient shipwrecks, some dating back 2600 years.
CNN has dubbed this area the “Shipwreck Capital of the World”. In autumn 2024, The Discovery Channel’s Expedition Unknown, hosted by Josh Gates, visited the island to film and document the shipwrecks and investigate why so many shipwrecks are located there.
“The Greek Triangle of Shipwrecks” is now available to watch on the Discovery Channel and HBOMAX.
John will take us step by step to reveal the secrets behind the numerous ancient shipwrecks in a single location, as well as the latest phase of the project.
John is a member of the Explorers Club and serves as Senior Diver/Technical Advisor at the Korseai Institute, Fournoi, Greece.
